A Romantic Love Story: Falling in Love on a Rainy Day
A Sudden Downpour and a Pair of Eyes
Sometimes, love enters our lives quite unexpectedly. There is no prior planning, no deliberate effort to seek someone out. Yet, a stranger gradually draws so close to our hearts that, eventually, it becomes impossible to imagine a future without them. This is one such love story—a story of how a single rain-drenched afternoon transformed the lives of two people.
The young man’s name is Arnab. He lived in a small town; his father held an ordinary job, and his mother managed the household. Arnab dreamed of becoming self-reliant, bringing smiles to his parents' faces, and finding someone with whom he could share his innermost thoughts without any hesitation. He was a man of few words; even when among friends, his mind would often drift away toward distant dreams. He believed that true love could never be forced—that it is a feeling that blossoms naturally within the hearts of two people.
On the other hand, there was a young woman named Meghla. Her smile held a certain enchantment, capable of instantly brightening anyone’s mood. She loved reading books and listening to the sound of rain. Often, while lost in old-fashioned love stories, she would wonder: could such love truly exist in real life? To her, love was more than just sweet words; it meant standing by someone in times of trouble, holding their hand firmly when they were feeling down, and—amidst the chaos of a busy life—always finding a little time for the person who mattered most.
That afternoon, the sky turned dark. After college, Meghla was waiting at the bus stand when, suddenly, a heavy downpour began. People around her scrambled to find shelter. Meghla had no umbrella, so she stood under the awning of a nearby shop, waiting for the rain to subside.
Just then, Arnab arrived and stood beside her. He was holding a blue umbrella. After a moment of silence, he smiled gently and said, “You’re welcome to step under my umbrella, if you’d like. It might be a long while before the rain stops.”
Meghla hesitated for a moment, then smiled sweetly and replied, “Thank you—but your umbrella is quite small!”
Arnab laughed and said, “The umbrella may be small, but the intention behind it certainly isn’t.”
Hearing this, Meghla burst into laughter. Watching her smile, it felt to Arnab as though the sound of all the rain in the world had suddenly fallen silent.
That day, they walked a short distance together under the same umbrella. They exchanged simple, casual remarks—about college, their studies, the rain, and the books they enjoyed. Yet, upon returning home, Arnab realized that those few minutes spent with the stranger had left a strange, lingering sense of joy in his heart.
And what about Meghla? That night, as she sat by her window watching the rain, she found herself thinking—she hadn’t even learned the young man’s name!
Sometimes, a beautiful love story begins exactly like this—with a brief, chance encounter whose true significance we fail to grasp at the very start.
Waiting for You, Day After Day
For the next few days, Arnab would glance toward that bus stop whenever he headed to college—without any real reason. He told himself that while it would be nice to see Meghla again, there was no need to go out of his way to look for her. But then again, does the heart always listen to reason?
A week later, one morning, he spotted Meghla in the college library. She was sitting by a window, reading a novel. Arnab watched from a distance at first, then gathered the courage to approach her.
“Are you the girl from that rainy day?” Arnab asked with a gentle smile.
Meghla looked up from her book. Within seconds, a spark of recognition lit up her eyes.
“And you’re the one with the small umbrella!”
Both of them laughed.
That was the beginning of their friendship. At first, it was just a few words exchanged whenever they met in the library, followed by tea together in the college canteen. Gradually, their conversations grew longer and more frequent. Arnab learned that Meghla’s favorite color is blue, her favorite season is the monsoon, and her greatest dream is to become self-reliant and support her family. Meghla, in turn, discovered that although Arnab appears calm on the outside, he is deeply emotional within. He rarely shares his own struggles with others, yet he cannot remain silent when he sees someone else in distress.
One day, Meghla arrived at college feeling down. She was dealing with some issues at home and was deeply anxious about her future. Even though her friends tried to cheer her up, her mood did not improve. Arnab sat beside her and simply said, “Perhaps not every problem can be solved today. But you are not alone. If you ever feel like talking, I am here to listen.”
That day, Meghla talked for a long time. Arnab didn’t offer any grand advice; he simply listened, with his full attention. In that act of listening, Meghla found a sense of peace—the kind that often cannot be found even in the most eloquent of words.
And so, their friendship began to deepen. A quick message before heading to college in the morning, sharing a meal at lunch, exchanging notes before exams, and talking for a while at night after returning home—all of this became an integral part of their daily lives.
Arnab no longer waited just to catch a glimpse of Meghla; he waited to hear the stories of her day. Whenever Meghla read a new book, she would tell Arnab first. If she had good news, she would share her joy with him. Conversely, whenever she felt down, nothing seemed right until she had spoken to Arnab.
One afternoon, while sitting on the college grounds, Meghla said, “You know, when I talk to you, everything feels a little easier.”
Arnab smiled. “So, I can solve your problems?”
Meghla shook her head and replied, “Not all problems. But you can certainly be the person who stands by my side when things get difficult.”
Arnab fell silent at her words. Deep down, he had long begun to see Meghla as something more than just a friend.
Yet, he said nothing. He feared that by confessing his love, he might lose the beautiful friendship they already shared.
Often, the hardest part of love isn’t fighting to win someone over, but finding the courage to speak what is in one’s own heart.
A Confession of Love: The Words Left Unspoken
Days passed by. Amidst the hustle of college life, exams, and hanging out with friends, the bond between Arnab and Meghla only grew deeper. They developed an understanding where words were not always necessary. If Meghla fell silent, Arnab could sense that she was feeling down; if Arnab became unusually quiet, Meghla would ask, “What’s wrong? Why are you so quiet today?”
And yet, neither of them ever spoke of their love. Arnab wondered if Meghla saw him only as a friend, while Meghla suspected that there might be someone else in Arnab’s life. It was these small, lingering doubts that kept them from speaking what was truly on their minds.
One day, a spring festival was organized at the college. Everywhere, there were colorful clothes, the fragrance of flowers, music, and the sound of laughter. Meghla arrived that day wearing a yellow outfit, with a small flower tucked into her hair. Seeing her, Arnab momentarily forgot everything else—even himself.
Meghla approached him and asked, “What’s the matter? Have you lost your words seeing me today?”
Feeling a bit shy, Arnab replied, “You look very beautiful today.”
Meghla smiled softly and asked, “Only today?”
The question made something stir deep within Arnab’s chest. He started to respond but stopped short. Laughing, Meghla walked away to join her friends, but her words echoed in Arnab’s mind throughout the rest of the day.
In the evening, after the event concluded, the two were walking along the riverbank next to the college. The sky was bathed in the crimson glow of the setting sun, and the light reflecting off the river made the surroundings look dreamily beautiful.
Suddenly, Arnab said, “Meghla, may I tell you something?”
“Go ahead.”
“What if you get angry after hearing it?”
“Tell me first; then I’ll decide whether or not to get angry.”
Arnab took a deep breath. “Ever since I met you, my days have changed. When I wake up in the morning, you are the first thing on my mind. Whenever something good happens, I want to share it with you above anyone else. When you’re sad, I feel down too. I don’t quite know how to put it, but I can no longer think of you merely as a friend. I have fallen in love with you, Meghla.”
After saying these words, it felt to Arnab as though time had stood still. He didn’t dare to look at Meghla’s face.
After a moment of silence, Meghla said softly, “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to hear these words from you?”
Arnab looked at her, stunned.
Lowering her gaze, Meghla smiled gently and said, “I love you too, Arnab. I have, for a long time.”
Standing there by the river, they held each other’s hands. There were no grand promises, nor was there any dramatic, cinematic scene—just the two of them. There were only the genuine feelings of two people, a desire to be by each other’s side, and a dream of building a future together.
Meghla had said, “Let our relationship never be confined to just sweet words. If problems ever arise, let us resolve them through conversation.”
Arnab took her hand and replied, “I cannot promise that I will never cause you pain, because humans make mistakes. But if I do hurt you, I will listen to what you have to say, try to understand my own mistakes, and I will never neglect our relationship.”
Meghla smiled gently and said, “That promise is the most beautiful one of all.”
From that day on, a new chapter began in their lives—a chapter of first love, where every small moment turned into a cherished memory.
The Test of Distance: Is love merely about being physically together?
No matter how beautiful the beginning of a love story may be, real life is not always as simple as a fairy tale. A difficult time eventually arrived in the lives of Arnab and Meghla.
After finishing college, Arnab received a job offer in another city. Given his family’s challenging financial situation, the job was crucial for him. Meanwhile, Meghla was looking to start her career at an organization closer to home.
When Arnab shared the news of his departure for the job, Meghla remained silent at first. She knew that Arnab needed to pursue his dreams, yet an unspoken fear took root in her heart. Would everything change—the habits built over time, their daily meetings, sitting side-by-side while sharing a cup of tea?
On the day of his departure, standing at the bus terminal, Meghla said, “Go and fulfill your dreams. I won’t hold you back.”
Arnab looked at her and replied, “And you must not put your own dreams on hold for my sake. We will both move forward—agreed?”
Meghla nodded, but once the bus pulled away, she could no longer hold back her tears.
Initially, the distance only served to deepen their love. Morning greetings over the phone, sharing stories of their day at night, and long video calls on holidays—everything flowed beautifully. In his small room in the new city, Arnab would sit and read the messages sent by Meghla. Meghla used to feel at ease hearing Arnab’s voice before going to sleep at night.
But as time passed, the pressure of work began to mount. Arnab often had to return from the office quite late. Sometimes, overcome by exhaustion, he would forget to call; at other times, he would fall asleep while they were still talking. Initially, Meghla tried to be understanding, but when waiting every single day becomes a habit, even the slightest neglect can turn into a source of deep pain.
One night, Meghla called and asked, “Do you no longer enjoy talking to me?”
Surprised, Arnab replied, “Why would you say that? I’ve been tied up with work all day.”
“I know you’re busy. But does it really take that much time to send a quick message?”
Arnab was exhausted. Irritated, he retorted, “Do I always have to explain everything to you? I have plenty of responsibilities, too!”
Hearing this, Meghla fell silent. She didn’t want to argue; she simply wished that, even amidst his busy schedule, Arnab would still keep her in his thoughts.
That night’s conversation ended in hurt feelings.
Over the next few days, although they did speak, the spark was gone. Meghla kept her pain to herself, while Arnab felt that perhaps Meghla wasn’t trying to understand his situation. Both loved each other, yet both were so consumed by their own struggles that they failed to truly grasp the other’s feelings.
One day, Meghla said over the phone, “Arnab, I’m not asking for your entire day. I just want to ensure that, even when you’re busy, I don’t feel like an outsider in your life.”
This time, Arnab listened in silence.
Meghla continued, “I want to believe that the distance between us is merely geographical—not something that exists within our hearts. But for that belief to hold, both of us need to make an effort.”
Her words left a deep impression on Arnab. He realized that love isn’t just about dreaming of the future; it’s also about carefully attending to the small responsibilities of the present.
That night, Arnab called Meghla to apologize. He offered no excuses. “I didn’t realize how much I’d hurt you,” he said. “I don’t want you to feel alone just because I’m busy. Could we set a new routine? I’ll let you know in advance when I’m swamped, and we’ll make sure to set aside some time each day just for us.”
With a gentle smile, Meghla replied, “And I’ll try not to mistake your busyness for neglect. But one thing’s for sure—we must never stop talking to each other.” That day, their relationship matured further. They realized that true love does not mean a life free from problems; rather, it means striving to understand one another even amidst those challenges.
The Return: Love Found at the End of Waiting
About a year passed. During this time, Arnab learned a great deal—living alone in a new city, managing his own expenses, taking on family responsibilities, and making time for his relationship. Meghla, too, made progress in her own pursuits; she learned to value her dreams while carefully nurturing her relationship with Arnab.
There were occasional disagreements and moments of hurt, but they held fast to one principle: if problems arose, they would not resort to silence to punish each other—instead, they would talk things through.
One day, Arnab told Meghla that he was returning home for the holidays. Meghla was overjoyed. She had so much to say—there were grievances to address, yet also many dreams to share. Still, over the phone, she simply said, “Travel safely. I’ll be waiting.”
On the afternoon of his return, Arnab stood at the familiar old bus stand. Clouds gathered in the sky, and a light rain began to fall—much like it had on that very first day.
Meghla arrived, carrying an umbrella. Seeing her, a smile lit up Arnab’s face. As she approached, she asked, “What’s this? Why are you standing in the rain again?”
Arnab smiled and replied, “I was just remembering something.”
“What is it?”
“It was in this very rain that I first met you. Back then, I had a small umbrella. I still have an umbrella today, but one thing has changed.”
Meghla looked at him, curious. “What has changed?”
Taking her hand, Arnab said, “Back then, I didn’t know you. Today, I cannot imagine a future without you.”
Tears welled up in Meghla’s eyes. She smiled softly and said, “You know, I’ve been longing to hear these words for a long time.”
Arnab continued, “There’s something I want to tell you. I want us to talk to our families about our future. If everything goes well, I hope to have you by my side as my life partner.” Meghla remained silent for a moment, then said, “I want that too. But we must move forward while respecting each other’s dreams, careers, and family responsibilities.”
Arnab nodded. “Of course. I don’t just want you to be a part of my life; I want us to help each other fulfill the dreams we hold for our own lives.”
Raindrops tapped rhythmically against the umbrella. The two began to walk side by side. The future ahead of them was not yet entirely clear—there might be further challenges, misunderstandings, or new responsibilities. But now they understood that love does not rely solely on feelings; sustaining it requires respect, trust, time, and the habit of truly listening to one another.
Returning home that day, Meghla opened her diary and wrote, “Love isn’t about finding someone who never makes a mistake. It’s about finding someone who knows how to admit when they’re wrong, how to apologize when they’ve caused hurt, and who strives, day after day, to make the relationship beautiful anew.”
That night, Arnab sat by his window, listening to the rain. He recalled that first day when, standing beneath a small umbrella, he had said to a girl who was then a stranger, “The wish is not a small one.”
Today, he realized that the same holds true for love. Nurturing a beautiful relationship doesn’t always require grand gifts or extraordinary promises. Sometimes, simply checking in on one another, listening attentively, admitting a mistake, or carving out a little time—even amidst a busy life—is more than enough.
And so, the love story of Arnab and Meghla unfolded—from a rain-soaked encounter to a bond built on trust, from friendship to love, and from love to the shared dream of building a future together.
For true love does not end at the final line of a story; rather, it is rewritten anew in the small, everyday moments.
3. A note for the reader
This romantic love story reminds us that love is not merely the joy of having someone by your side; Respecting someone’s feelings, acknowledging one’s own mistakes, and being willing to stand by someone during difficult times are all part of love.
If you have someone in your life with whom talking makes your heart feel lighter, then cherish that relationship. Love is not just about saying "I love you"; it must also be expressed through actions. At the same time, one should never lose sight of the importance of one’s own dreams, self-respect, and personal life.
