Prem Kahini Golpo | Pyaar Ki Kalam

A Love Story: A Love That Didn't End Even After It Ended

The First Meeting—Where the Story Begins

Sometimes, people enter our lives through the most ordinary of encounters, yet that simple introduction eventually evolves into the most extraordinary story of our lives. This love story is just like that. It begins at an ordinary college in a small town. The boy’s name was Arnab, and the girl’s name was Meghla. Arnab was a man of few words. While everyone else at college was busy socializing, laughing, and discussing their futures, Arnab could often be found sitting in a corner of the library with a book. Meghla, on the other hand, was the exact opposite; her smile seemed to bring the entire corridor to life. Her friends used to say, "Wherever you are, there seems to be a special glow." Arnab would watch Meghla from afar but never mustered the courage to speak to her. One day, it suddenly started to rain. After college ended, everyone rushed out. Arnab had an umbrella, but Meghla was standing at the college gate, waiting for the rain to stop. After hesitating for a moment, Arnab finally stepped forward and offered his umbrella, saying, "You can take this if you like." Meghla looked at him in surprise, smiled, and asked, "And what about you?" Arnab smiled gently and replied, "It doesn't matter if I get a little wet." Meghla didn't take the umbrella; instead, she said, "Then let's both get a little wet." That was the first time they walked side by side. Rainwater on both sides of the road, a small umbrella overhead, and a strange silence shared between two strangers—perhaps no one realized it then, but the most beautiful chapter of their lives had just begun. Gradually, their conversations grew. It started with academics, then moved to movies, music, the future, and family—there was no end to the things they talked about. One day, Meghla jokingly remarked, "I never knew someone so quiet could actually say so much." Arnab smiled and replied, "You can't share everything with just anyone." Meghla didn't quite grasp the meaning of those words at the time. But a few days later, when Arnab had her stand beneath the old *Krishnachura* tree behind the college and said, "My days feel incomplete without you," Meghla simply lowered her head and smiled. That smile was her answer. Love had evolved beyond mere friendship; both realized they had gradually carved out a space in each other's lives. Arnab remembered Meghla’s little habits, while Meghla could decipher the unspoken thoughts behind Arnab’s silence. Wishing each other luck before exams, sending a brief message before bed, feeling down when they couldn't meet—all these moments made their relationship simple yet profound. They made no grand promises; they simply said, "No matter what happens, we will stay together." Yet, life sometimes subjects the most beautiful promises to the toughest tests.

The First Obstacle in Love

Their final year of college was the most beautiful time for them. Arnab was preparing for a job, while Meghla aspired to teach after completing her studies. They dreamed of the future—a small house, plants on the veranda, outings together on holidays. These dreams weren't grand, but to them, they were the most precious things in the world. Then, one day, Meghla revealed that her family was considering marriage for her. At first, Arnab didn't take it too seriously; he assumed everything would work out in time. But within a few weeks, the situation changed. Meghla’s father made it clear that they would never accept her relationship with Arnab, primarily because he hadn't secured a job yet and his family’s financial standing was modest. Her family believed that love alone couldn't sustain a household; a secure future, social standing, and money were essential. Arnab told Meghla, "Give me some time. I will prove myself." Wiping away her tears, Meghla replied, "I believe in you. But how do I convince everyone else?" Arnab had no answer to that question either. Yet, he didn't give up. He studied day and night and sat for job examinations, while Meghla constantly encouraged him. But the pressure from her family was mounting. One night, Meghla called, weeping, and asked, "Arnab, if I go against everyone for your sake, will you love me the same way for the rest of your life?" Without a moment's hesitation, Arnab replied, "Until my last breath." Meghla said, "Then I will try, too." But a few days later, Arnab received the most devastating news: Meghla’s marriage had been arranged. The man worked abroad, and his family was well-off. Although Arnab was shattered, he did not want to appear weak before Meghla. He simply asked, "Do you really want to go through with this marriage?" There was a long silence on the other end. Then, very softly, Meghla said, "I don't know." Those three words seemed to break Arnab’s heart, for he realized that Meghla didn't want to leave him but was yielding to circumstances. They met for the last time beneath that old *Krishnachura* tree. Meghla asked, "Is this where our story ends?" Arnab remained silent for a moment before saying, "Stories don't end, Meghla. Sometimes, it is just the two people who drift apart." Weeping, Meghla said, "Then forget me." Arnab replied, "Can one simply choose to forget someone they truly love?" That day, they parted ways. There was no dramatic farewell, no promises made. Just two people walking away on separate paths, hiding their tears. And Arnab realized that the hardest separations in life are wordless—marked only by a long, heavy silence.

Five years later—does love truly change?

Time does not stand still, and neither did Arnab. After losing Meghla, he focused on his own life. Following many setbacks, he finally landed a good job and gradually brought financial stability to his family. To an outsider, Arnab’s life appeared successful. Yet, tucked away in a drawer at home, a scrap of paper remained—bearing Meghla’s handwriting: "Be well, despite everything." Arnab had never been able to throw it away. Five years passed. One day, work took Arnab to Kolkata. After finishing his tasks, he stepped into a bookstore in the evening. Suddenly, he heard a familiar voice from behind: "Do you still read books?" Arnab’s heart skipped a beat. He turned slowly. There stood Meghla. The smile from five years ago was gone, but her eyes remained exactly the same. For a moment, Arnab was speechless. Meghla asked, "How are you?" Arnab smiled faintly and replied, "I'm good. And you?" Meghla said, "I am too." It was a simple statement, yet for both of them, it was the hardest sentence to utter. After a while, Meghla revealed that she had been married, but the relationship hadn't lasted; they had separated a few years ago. Arnab was surprised but asked no questions. He simply asked, "Are you happy?" Lowering her eyes, Meghla replied, "I’m trying to be." Arnab realized then that while some relationships in life fall apart, the sound of that breaking lingers in the heart for years. They talked for a long time that day, reminiscing about the past. That rainy day, the *Krishnachura* tree, the college canteen, the nights before exams—everything seemed to come alive again. Before saying goodbye, Meghla asked, "Arnab, can I ask you something?" "Go ahead." "Do you still love me?" Arnab remained silent for a long time after hearing the question. Then he said, "The love might not be the same as it once was. But the place I held for you in my heart—no one else has ever been able to take it." Tears welled up in Meghla’s eyes. She said, "I haven't forgotten you either." Arnab looked at her and asked, "So, can we start over?" Meghla didn't give a direct answer. She simply said, "To rekindle a relationship, the desire of just two people isn't enough. One has to overcome deep-seated fears, family expectations, societal pressures, and even the shattered trust within oneself." Arnab understood that Meghla was right. Their old love had returned, but they were no longer the same people they used to be. Five years had changed them. Love was no longer just about emotion; it was now a battle between love and reality.

The Final Chapter—Where Love Finds New Meaning

Over the next few months, Arnab and Meghla gradually began talking again. This time, they didn't rush things. There was no rule that they *had* to speak every day; instead, they focused on understanding each other's lives. Meghla shared the pain of her past, and Arnab spoke of his loneliness. One day, Meghla said, "I used to think love meant keeping someone close to you. Now I realize, love means accepting someone—fears, mistakes, and past included." Arnab smiled and replied, "And I’ve realized that if the fear of losing someone outweighs the love itself, one ends up losing that very love." Eventually, their families learned of the situation. At first, there were objections. They asked, "Why now, after all these years?" This time, Arnab didn't argue with anyone. He simply said, "Because we realized that separating wasn't the solution to our problems. Living apart taught us that while it is possible to survive without each other, finding true happiness without one another might not be." After much thought, Meghla's family finally respected their decision. One evening, they stood once more beneath that old *Krishnachura* tree. The very spot where they had parted ways five years ago now seemed to bear witness to a new story. Meghla said, "You once told me that stories never end." Arnab smiled. "Yes, I did." Meghla asked, "So, what about *our* story?" Arnab held her hand and said, "From now on, we’ll write this story together." There were tears in Meghla's eyes, but they weren't tears of pain; they were tears of peace—the relief of finding what had been lost after a long, arduous wait. They got married a few months later. There was no grand ceremony; they began their new life with a small, intimate gathering of close ones. One day, after the wedding, Meghla opened one of Arnab’s old drawers and found that piece of paper from five years ago. It bore her own handwriting: "Be well, despite everything." Surprised, Meghla asked, "You kept this for all these years?" Arnab replied, "Not to forget you. But to remember that, once, someone truly loved me." Wiping away a tear, Meghla asked, "And now?" Looking at her, Arnab said, "There is no need to remember anymore. Because here you are, right in front of me." Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of this story isn't just their reunion; it is the realization that true love is not always easy. Sometimes family stands in the way, sometimes time drives people apart, and sometimes wrong decisions cause separation. But if love is genuine, it means more than just possessing someone—it means waiting, understanding, forgiving, and having the courage to start over when necessary. This love story reminds us of one thing: some people enter our lives as stories, some remain as memories, and very few return as destiny. If there is someone in your life whom you still haven't been able to forget, ask yourself this: have you truly lost them, or have you merely lost them to the passage of time? Because some loves never really end; they simply wait for the right moment to begin again.
