An Expat Love Story: Love Beyond Distance
Part One: The Love That Didn't End at the Airport
Love sometimes enters a person's life in the most unexpected ways—perhaps while sitting on the back bench of a classroom, on a rain-soaked afternoon, or even through a simple phone call. Yet, there are loves that remain distant even when physically close, and others that stay deeply rooted in the heart despite spanning thousands of kilometers. Today’s story is one such tale of love across borders—the story of Rahat and Meghla.
Rahat came from an ordinary family. His father ran a small business, and his mother managed the household. After completing his education, when he failed to secure a decent job despite his best efforts, Rahat decided to go abroad to improve his family's financial situation. He harbored many dreams: to build a home of his own, to ensure his parents lived comfortably, and—someday—to marry Meghla and start a family with her.
Rahat and Meghla’s acquaintance began quite simply. Living in the same neighborhood, they had known each other since childhood. Yet, neither of them realized exactly when their friendship blossomed into love.
Meghla would often ask, "If you ever go far away, you won't forget me, will you?"
Rahat would smile and reply, "People don't forget just because they go far away. People forget only when the love in their hearts fades."
Meghla believed those words.
On the day he left for abroad, Rahat’s eyes held dreams, while Meghla’s were filled with tears. The airport was bustling with crowds—people saying their goodbyes, packing bags, or embracing their loved ones one last time. Meghla simply stood there in silence.
Rahat stepped closer and asked, "Why are you crying?"
Wiping her eyes, Meghla replied, "I don't know. It feels like my world will become a little empty once you leave."
Holding her hand firmly, Rahat said, "I am going for the sake of our future. This distance isn't permanent. One day, I will return."
After the final airport announcement, Rahat walked away. Meghla remained standing in the same spot.
The plane took off. The city lights below shrank into tiny specks. Sitting by the window, Rahat took out his phone and typed a message to Meghla—
“I am going far away—but away from *you*.”
Meghla remained silent for a long time after reading the message.
That marked the beginning of their new lives—one in an unfamiliar city abroad, the other in the familiar lanes of their hometown. Between them lay a distance of thousands of kilometers.
But does love truly care about distance?
Part Two: Waiting on the Other End of the Line
Life abroad is not as easy from the inside as it appears from the outside. Amidst a new country, new people, a new language, and a new job, Rahat realized that while earning money was difficult, being far away from his loved ones was even harder.
For the first few months, he spoke to Meghla every day—sometimes via video call, sometimes a regular call, and sometimes through messages. Returning from work, Rahat would lie on his bed, exhausted, waiting for Meghla’s call.
Meghla would ask, “Are you very tired today?”
Rahat would reply, “Yes. But talking to you makes the fatigue fade away.”
Meghla would smile.
Their love was confined to the screen of a phone. There were no in-person meetings, no walking together, no sharing tea at the same table. Yet, the small, everyday conversations kept their relationship alive.
One day, Meghla said, “You know, I really want to see you today.”
Rahat smiled and said, “I’ll make a video call.”
Meghla shook her head.
“No. On a video call, I can see you, but I can’t touch you.”
Rahat fell silent upon hearing this.
Perhaps that is the greatest pain of a long-distance relationship—the loved one remains out of reach, even though they feel so close.
Days went by. Due to the pressure of work, Rahat could no longer talk as regularly as before. Sometimes he stayed up late working; other times, he had extra shifts. At first, Meghla understood, but eventually, she began to feel disheartened.
One night, Meghla called and said, “You’ve changed.”
Surprised, Rahat asked, “Me?”
“Yes. You used to call ten times a day. Now, you don’t even find the time for a single call.” Rahat sighed and said, “Meghla, I haven’t changed. My circumstances have.”
“But where do I fit into those circumstances?”
Rahat could not answer that question immediately.
That was the first time a sense of hurt and grievance arose between them.
Rahat knew he wasn’t neglecting Meghla; he was simply striving for the future. But Meghla was unaware of just how hard Rahat was working every day. She only felt that the man who once eagerly awaited her every word was now too busy.
Distance is not merely physical. Sometimes, busyness, hurt feelings, and unspoken words also create a rift between two people.
